Carnegie Hall – Judy and Arthur Zankel Hall

The 650-seat Judy and Arthur Zankel Hall is a subterranean mid-sized performance space located under the Isaac Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The technical sophistication of the hall allows it to be highly adaptable with floor plans changing from an end-stage, to a center-stage, or to a flat floor configuration. This is accomplished by a variable floor that uses a series of lifts and floor height changes. Rows of 430 parterre-level seats can be moved on “wagons” of variable sizes using air casters. A storage “garage” enables the staging and conversion of the seats and wagons to different configurations. TSI provided a high level of customized engineering in order to satisfy the unique requirements of the installation. Specially engineered chair arms at the wagon joints allow one chair to seamlessly join to another, eliminating a “double arm” effect at the joints. Custom designed elliptical foot plates, tapered chair backs, and specially-shaped arm caps echo the hall itself, which is a rectangle within an elliptical shell. Removable and exchangeable magnetized row tags accommodate the different room configurations.
